Teddy Bears, Valentines Flowers and Chocolates by Florists Aberdeen: Why we send gifts on Valentine’s Day.
The ground is thawing and hearts are warming up all-around as February 14th grows near. But where did this tradition come from? Why do we choose this particular day of the year to bestow our sweeties with sweets and lavish those who make our hearts go va-va-voom with Valentines flowers?
St. Valentine’s Day was established in 500 AD and is actually named for several Christian martyrs by the name of Valentine, in particular St. Valentine of Rome. To this day, little is known about him, beyond the fact that he was buried on February 14th. Thus the feast-day of St. Valentine was originally celebrated on that day. It is widely held that it was not until many many years later in 1382 England, however, that Valentine’s Day became associated with romantic love in the way that we now know perceive.
The poet Geoffrey Chaucer, most known to Americans as the author of “Canterbury Tales,” wrote a poem to celebrate the engagement of King Richard II to Anne of Bohemia entitled “Parliament of Foules.” In it, he penned: “For this was Saint Valentine’s Day, when every bird cometh there to choose his mate.” With that, the connection between romance and Valentine’s day as we know it was born.
Paper valentines flowers and birds surrounding lovers’ handwritten words, became popular and continued garnering interest in the 19th century. Valentines originally drawn and inscribed by the hands of lovers, began to be made in bulk and in factories. In the later part of the 20th century, with the help of commercial card and gifts companies catering to the holiday, bestowing gifts of all kinds, teddy bears, chocolates, and valentines flowers, in addition to the traditional Valentine’s cards, has now become the norm.
Now, Valentine’s Day is a time for all to honour their love and affection for one another by sending Valentines flower delivery Aberdeen, chocolates and cards through florists Aberdeen as declarations of fondness and devotion.
